Israel's Foreign Ministry says the official death toll from the deadly Hamas attack on Israel on October 7 has been lowered to 1,200. Israeli officials previously put the death toll at 1,400.
According to the Associated Press, the ministry did not explain the reason for the review. But an Israeli official said the number was changed after a painstaking, week-long process of identifying the bodies, many of which were mutilated or burned.
The official said the final death toll could still change. He said a number of bodies had not been identified and it was unclear whether all of the nearly 240 hostages believed to be held by Hamas were still alive. The official spoke on condition of anonymity pending an official government announcement.
