The Minister of Communication and Information Technology of Nepal, Rekha Sharma, stated that the decision to ban TikTok was made during a Cabinet meeting. Sharma mentioned that colleagues are working on the technical closure of the app. Purushottam Khanal, the head of Nepal's Telecommunications Authority, added that internet service providers have been requested to shut down the app, and some have already complied with the government's decision.

Opposition leaders in Nepal criticized the move, stating that it lacks "effectiveness, maturity, and responsibility." Former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Communist Party leader Pradeep Gyawali argued that instead of restricting these platforms, they should be regulated to address unwanted content.

According to local media reports, Nepal has witnessed over 1,600 cases of cybercrimes related to TikTok in the last four years. TikTok has faced partial or complete bans in several countries, with many citing security concerns.

India banned TikTok, along with dozens of other Chinese apps, in June 2020, citing potential threats to national security. Pakistan has banned the app at least four times, condemning its content as "immoral and indecent."

Somalia's government announced the prohibition of social media platforms TikTok and Telegram, along with the online betting platform 1XBet.

In the United States, the state of Montana also imposed a ban on TikTok. Governor Greg Gianforte signed a corresponding law to protect residents from potential intelligence data collection by China.
