The FAA asserts its control over the inquiry into the Starship rocket mishap that occurred during SpaceX's Saturday test launch. The agency aims to ensure SpaceX adheres to the approved FAA accident investigation plan and other regulatory requirements, as stated in their recent announcement.
This isn't the first time the FAA has intervened in a Starship investigation. Following the initial Starship test mission in April, which originated from the Starbase, an onboard explosion took place shortly after liftoff. The FAA monitored that investigation as well.
SpaceX conducted its second test launch of the Starship rocket on Saturday, November 18, designed for future Moon and Mars missions. However, after the separation of the first stage (Super Heavy) from the second stage, the spacecraft (Ship 25), an explosion occurred. Approximately 10 minutes after liftoff, SpaceX reported a loss of communication with Ship 25 during its flight, suspecting a malfunction.
