GraphCast, Google's latest AI achievement, has revolutionized weather forecasting. Utilizing a machine learning architecture based on historical weather data, GraphCast analyzes the current weather conditions on Earth and those from six hours ago. It then calculates the anticipated weather for the next six hours and extends this prediction to cover a remarkable 10-day period worldwide, all in less than a minute.
Data-driven Accuracy
Researchers at Google integrated 39 years of historical weather data (from 1979 to 2017) into GraphCast's algorithm. The model was subsequently tested using the available data and the remaining years to verify its accuracy. Notably, GraphCast outperformed the results of the ECMWF supercomputer, accurately predicting cyclones and extreme temperatures.
A Global Responsibility for AI Ethics
In response to this technological breakthrough, Google's CEO, Sundar Pichai, emphasized the shared responsibility of countries in establishing global frameworks for Artificial Intelligence. As AI continues to advance, ethical considerations and international cooperation become crucial aspects of shaping its impact on society.
