The record-breaking temperature was officially documented by the government agency, highlighting the severity of the heatwave. The city of Aracuai in Minas Gerais bore the brunt of the extreme heat, attributing it to the El Niño phenomenon and climate change. Local meteorologists predict a possible decrease in temperatures later this week.

According to the National Institute of Meteorology, three state capitals are expected to experience temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. The entire country declared a red alert due to the heat, a month before the official start of summer in the southern hemisphere. Brazil witnessed a surge in energy consumption as people sought relief from the sweltering conditions.

The high temperatures even led to the cancellation of a concert by Australian singer Taylor Swift in Rio de Janeiro. A 23-year-old fan tragically lost her life due to the heat before the performance on Friday.

Official studies released two weeks ago revealed that the average temperature in the country from July to October was higher than historical averages. Scientists warn that heatwaves are becoming longer and more intense, a trend expected to persist as long as greenhouse gas emissions continue to warm the planet.

In the northern region of Brazil, specifically in Lake Tefe within the Amazon basin, over a hundred rare Amazon river dolphins, classified as a vulnerable species in the International Red List, succumbed to the heat and drought.
