In a unilateral decision, North Korea's Ministry of Defense declared that its forces are no longer bound by the agreement reached on September 19, 2018, and that all military activities will be promptly reinstated across all sectors. This withdrawal from the agreement occurred a day after South Korea suspended part of the deal as a protest against North Korea's launch of a spy satellite into orbit on Tuesday.
South Korea's Minister of National Defense, Shin Won-sik, asserted that North Korea's dispatch of a reconnaissance satellite into space violates the 2018 agreement. The South Korean government emphasized its readiness for a swift and decisive response if North Korea uses the suspension of the agreement as an excuse for further provocations.
Minister Shin highlighted that North Korea's deployment of a spy satellite into space constitutes an "obvious violation" of relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and a "serious provocation" undermining international community security. He added that the suspension of parts of the agreement was necessary to restore intelligence and observation in border areas after North Korea repeatedly failed to fulfill its obligations.
