Holyfield's Revelation
Evander Holyfield, a renowned figure in the boxing world and former heavyweight champion, recently shared insights into his first career defeat.
The boxing legend attributes his loss to Riddick Bowe to one pivotal factor: not heeding his mother's advice.
"The most crucial aspect of the Bowe fight - he became the first to make me go against what my mom used to tell me. She advised me not to befriend those whom I would later have to fight. You often tell these people things you shouldn't," Holyfield revealed.
Reflecting on their history, Holyfield highlighted their past camaraderie, stating, "Bowe was my sparring partner when I was an amateur. I helped him out because I had the money and all that. We were good friends; we talked about everything. And then suddenly, I had to fight him."
Holyfield acknowledged Bowe's prowess, describing him as an astounding fighter capable of both long-range and close-quarter combat. Despite Bowe previously tiring quickly during training sessions, Holyfield recounted that during their bout, Bowe emerged as the superior combatant.
In the fall of 1992, Evander Holyfield suffered defeat against Riddick Bowe, relinquishing the WBA, IBF, and WBC championship belts.
In 1993 and 1995, Holyfield and Bowe faced off twice more. The second bout saw Holyfield seeking redemption, securing victory by a split decision. Their third encounter concluded with Bowe's triumph via technical knockout in the eighth round.
Over his professional career, Evander Holyfield engaged in 57 bouts, achieving 44 victories, enduring 10 defeats, and securing 2 draws. Additionally, 1 fight was recognized as not taking place.
