The United States of America vetoed a UN Security Council resolution on a humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip in the war between Israel and Hamas.
According to Reuters, 13 out of 15 members of the Security Council voted for the draft resolution on an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip for humanitarian reasons, introduced by the UAE, while Great Britain abstained. However, the United States vetoed the document.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called on the Security Council to support the proposal.
It is noted that the United States and Israel oppose the ceasefire because they believe that it will only benefit Hamas. Instead, Washington is supporting a pause in fighting to protect civilians and allow the hostages to be released.
Deputy US Ambassador to the UN Robert Wood told the Security Council that the draft resolution is a hasty, unbalanced text "that is divorced from reality."
"We do not support this resolution's call for an unsustainable ceasefire that will only sow the seeds of the next war," Wood said.
The US proposed significant amendments to the draft, including condemning the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks, which Israel said killed 1,200 people and took 240 hostages.
