Russia uses not only Iranian Shahed-136/131 drones for drone attacks on Ukrainian cities, but also cheaper analogues of its own production.
This was reported by analysts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), citing Russian sources. They suggested that during the attack on the Kyiv region, the invaders used Italmas long-range drones.
As noted, these UAVs are much lighter than Iranian ones and are more difficult to detect and shoot down. They are also cheaper to produce, although they carry less explosives. In this regard, their use separately is of little use. According to ISW experts, Italmas are used together with Shaheds.
“Russia is likely trying to expand and diversify its arsenal of drones, missiles and guided bombs to strike Ukrainian critical infrastructure ahead of the fall/winter season,” the analysts added.
ISW noted that the use of Italmas is part of this plan.
