American Publisher Launches Illustrated Magazine Showcasing Ukrainian Poetry

River Paw Press, an American publishing house, is set to make a significant cultural contribution with the launch of "Uyava," an illustrated magazine dedicated to Ukrainian poetry. This inaugural issue, scheduled for release on Friday, October 27, coincides with Ukraine's celebration of Ukrainian Language Day.
What sets "Uyava" apart is its inclusivity. In addition to presenting original works of Ukrainian poetry, the magazine will feature translations into both English and Hindi. This move aims to introduce Ukrainian poetry to Hindi-speaking audiences in India and around the world, while also catering to English-speaking readers, fostering cross-cultural understanding through language and literature.
The initiative to create "Uyava" stems from a recognition of the historical injustices suffered by Ukrainian language and literature. Particularly during the Soviet era, Ukrainian language and literature faced marginalization and suppression, both within Ukraine and among Ukrainian diaspora communities. The use of Ukrainian language and literature was often discouraged, hindering their spread and development. It is against this backdrop of historical injustice that the concept of "Uyava" emerged.
The translation work for "Uyava" will be carried out by Kalpna Singh-Chitnis, the editor and founder of the magazine. She will be supported by a small team from River Paw Press and consulting editors.
