Renowned Ukrainian sculptor Johann Georg Pinsel's masterpieces have made an exciting journey from Lviv to Krakow and are now heading to Riga, Latvia. The sculptures were part of the "Expression: Rococo Sculpture from Lviv" exhibition, which ran at the Royal Castle on Wawel Hill in Krakow since March.
These remarkable sculptures were initially showcased in Vilnius, Lithuania, at the National Museum "Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania," before their trip to Poland. Now, they have returned to Lviv, and there are plans to exhibit them in the Latvian National Museum in Riga. Discussions with the museum's director are currently underway, highlighting the sculptures' widespread popularity and significance.
Mykhailo Vozniak, the gallery's director, expressed his admiration for the exhibition curated by Andrzej Betley, the director of the Royal Castle on Wawel Hill, stating that it is the finest in Pinsel's exhibition history. He emphasized that this presentation was unparalleled, even when compared to renowned museums like the Louvre, Milan, and Vienna. The meticulously displayed sculptures left a profound impact on visitors, drawing hundreds of art enthusiasts.
The exhibition sought to recreate the grandeur of the altar in the All Saints Church in the village of Hodovycia near Lviv, for which these 18th-century sculptures were originally crafted. On March 31, 2023, sculptures by Johann Georg Pinsel from the collection of the Lviv National Art Gallery named after Voznytsky were unveiled in the Royal Castle on Wawel Hill in Krakow. In addition to sculptures from Lviv, Wroclaw, and one from the Wawel collection, visitors had the opportunity to explore the "Sculptor's Workshop," a reconstruction made with the help of graphics and samples of the sculptor's woodworking tools.
The exhibition also featured 3D models created from scans of Pinsel's original bozzetti (three-dimensional sculptural sketches), which are preserved in the Bavarian National Museum in Munich.
