SpaceX, under the leadership of Elon Musk, is facing scrutiny as a Reuters investigation exposes a significant increase in workplace injuries resulting from safety violations. The investigation documented at least 600 previously unreported injuries at SpaceX since 2014, including limb fractures, amputations, and one fatal incident.

Chaotic Work Environment:
Employees at SpaceX attribute these injuries to a chaotic work environment, where inadequately trained and overworked staff routinely neglect basic safety rules in an attempt to meet aggressive deadlines set by Elon Musk. The company maintains the position that workers are responsible for their own safety, according to statements from over a dozen current and former employees.

Hiring Practices and Training Neglect:

The investigation also highlights SpaceX's rushed hiring practices and the regular neglect of proper training or equipping of new recruits, as shared by several current and former employees. Despite a fatal incident in 2014 involving Lonnie LeBlanc, who lost his life while assisting in transporting insulation, safety regulations continued to be overlooked.

Underreporting and Regulatory Issues:
SpaceX, obligated to report annual injury data to U.S. regulators OSHA and BLS, failed to update official data between 2016 and 2021. In 2022, the injury rate at the company's launch site in Texas was 4.8 injuries or illnesses per 100 employees, six times higher than the industry average. Reuters' analysis of state and federal safety violation records found no sanctions for data non-disclosure.

Limited Regulatory Oversight:

Experts in occupational safety emphasize that SpaceX's poor safety record underscores the hazards of working in the rapidly developing and weakly regulated U.S. space industry. Despite safety concerns, SpaceX seemingly benefitted from its readiness to compromise on worker safety guarantees, outpacing competitors and securing lucrative government contracts.

This revelation raises questions about the broader safety culture within the aerospace industry and the need for enhanced regulatory measures to ensure the well-being of workers.
