YouTube will soon mandate creators to add special markers when uploading "processed or synthetic content that is realistic, including the use of AI tools." This includes videos that "realistically depict events that never happened or content that shows someone saying or doing something they didn't actually do." According to YouTube's vice presidents Jennifer Flannery O'Connor and Emily Moxley, this is particularly crucial when discussing sensitive topics.
The ability to mark videos disclosing information will be added during the video upload process on YouTube and will take effect at the beginning of next year. Special labels will appear in the video description panels, but for "certain types of content on sensitive topics," the labels will be placed more prominently within the video itself. Content created using YouTube's own generative AI tools will also be marked.
Content creators who do not use the new labeling may face sanctions, such as content removal or suspension from the YouTube Partner Program, which allows content monetization. The platform also noted that AI-generated content violating community rules will face similar restrictions or removal as other videos.
YouTube has also announced that users will be able to request the removal of content created by AI or other means that imitates a person, including their face or voice, by simply making a removal request. YouTube states that it will consider "various factors," such as the satirical nature of the content or the presence of public figures when deciding whether to fulfill a user's request for content removal.
The platform's music partners will also have the option to request the removal of music generated by AI that imitates the voices of specific artists.
These platform changes come amid concerns about the increasing number of AI-generated images of a sexual nature and other content manipulating people's faces and voices.
