In a groundbreaking development, Shakira successfully negotiated a deal to circumvent legal proceedings in Barcelona regarding accusations of evading $15.7 million in Spanish income tax. The settlement entails the singer admitting to the charges and agreeing to pay a fine equivalent to half of the outstanding debt – over 7.3 million euros (approximately 8 million dollars).
Additionally, Shakira consented to another fine of 438,000 euros (over 478,000 dollars) to avoid a three-year prison sentence, as announced by the judge during the initial court hearing. The decision to reach this agreement, Shakira stated, is driven by personal, emotional, and sentimental reasons unrelated to legal considerations.
This resolution comes after Shakira had previously vowed to combat what she deemed as false accusations. The prosecution had sought an eight-year imprisonment and the repayment of taxes owed to Spain. Notably, the Barcelona prosecutor's office concluded a three-year investigation in July, alleging that the 44-year-old artist had not paid 14.5 million euros (15.7 million dollars) to the budget, potentially leading to a prison term.
